My inquiry explored the functions of libraries in today’s world of information technology. What will draw more people into libraries with the continuously expanding use of the Internet, with information right at our fingertips? In addition to designing a library to suit Rittenhouse Square and its historically and socially dense context, I explored these important and very relevant questions.

The Internet now serves as a new way to store and transfer information in a much more efficient way, a function once served by libraries within communities. My intent was to design a space that would encourage the users to explore the archives, socialize, and have a place to think.

  7. Green Roof

As the Internet facilitates high connection, the library facilitates high connection in its circulation. It also functions as a link between Rittenhouse Square and a greenspace to the north of the site. A porous network of bridges encourages the user to explore the library. The stacks store all forms of material information while the reading spaces are arranged along the perimeter and on the green roofs. They provide access to computers and places to read.
